While there are many paid tools you can use to cut your research time, learning how to do research on your own is highly recommended as it gives you a feel for what eBay itself has in competitor product lines and what is not important right now.

You can go to eBay home page as of today and on the left side of the main page, you will see multiple listing categories. Browse through them to locate the appropriate category for your desired niche. Then do a search on eBay for main keywords relating to that category and see how much popularity and competition there is for those certain words.

If your search results in over 20,000 or more listings for that certain keyword, niche or sub-niche, you know that you have potentially found a profitable niche. However, the drawback is that many times the competition is quite high.

Unless you are already a seasoned seller on eBay, you should probably not try starting your business in such highly competitive category since you are most likely to struggle or quit.
